Nine Steps to AI Fluency for PM Leaders explores how it is considered table stakes in 2026.
True growth in PM leadership starts with people. Specifically, it begins with your desire to learn and lead. My 2025 LinkedIn Rewind reflection highlights a deep personal transformation. During this period, I transitioned from technical expert to AI-fluent leader. Moreover, this path turned me into both a practitioner and a change agent.
As I shared in my recent blog, What I Built in 2025: AI Fluency, knowledge alone isn’t the main challenge. Instead, I found that “translating knowledge into implementation requires frameworks, systematic approaches, and trust-building mechanisms.” Consequently, this ecosystem serves as the bridge that helps close that gap. We must move beyond just knowing the tools. Rather, we must learn to lead the change they bring.
Moving Beyond Simple Tool Use
AI fluency extends beyond merely using apps. Instead, it focuses on the people who guide the technology. Initially, I earned AI Fluency certifications from Anthropic and Microsoft. Through these courses, I learned that strategy comes before code.
Currently, I am creating several agents in my GitHub portfolio. These agents address real problems. As a result, these tools allow people to focus on creative tasks. However, this requires a fundamental shift in thinking.
Mastering the Human Side First
Step 1: Aerospace Discipline
I began my career in aerospace manufacturing. During this time, I managed over 30 capital projects in heavily regulated industries. Consequently, this taught me that structure enables freedom.
For PMs, this means mastering project management basics first. Specifically, you must understand risk, budget, and scope. In fact, these skills form the bedrock of AI governance today. Without discipline, AI becomes chaotic.
Additional Insight: You may adapt this level of discipline to your context. Smaller teams often start with lighter frameworks and scale as they grow.
Step 2: Industrial Engineering
My engineering background taught me systems thinking. Over the years, I spent time mapping complex value streams. Notably, AI agents are digital versions of these physical paths.
First, you must understand your current process. Then, use systems thinking to identify optimal AI placement. Indeed, every digital tool starts with human planning. Importantly, we should not automate for technology’s sake. Rather, we automate to improve human systems.
Additional Insight: Systems thinking requires time investment upfront. However, this investment pays dividends when you’re ready to scale.
Step 3: Nonprofit Agility
Innovation often thrives within tight constraints. Previously, I helped thousands of students with limited resources. As a result, this taught me creativity and speed.
Now, PMs must lead with agility. Specifically, deliver value even with small budgets. Moreover, empower your team to discover new paths. In fact, resource limits force focus on what matters.
Additional Insight: While “doing more with less” drives innovation, sustainable solutions also matter. Therefore, celebrate small wins with your team to maintain energy.
Step 4: Social Capital
Building solutions represents only half your work. Additionally, you must build a support network. Therefore, build professional bonds before you need them. First, help others succeed with new technology. Then, strong relationships make AI goals easier.
In the AI era, trust becomes the primary currency. Consequently, people must believe in your vision to follow.
Additional Insight: Building social capital takes time and intention. If you’re starting fresh, consider joining professional communities and contributing value before asking for help.
Step 5: The Cross-Industry Pivot
My playbook came from observing multiple industries. Throughout this process, I saw similar patterns and concerns about operational effectiveness. First, document how your team solves problems. Next, this helps you build better AI tools. Furthermore, patterns help identify what AI can solve.
Additional Insight: Each industry has unique contexts worth understanding. Therefore, as you transfer patterns, validate them within your new environment.
Step 6: Build a Portfolio Career
You become more adaptable with varied backgrounds. Specifically, I worked in aerospace and nonprofits. As a result, this variety enriched my toolkit significantly. Moreover, diverse teams see solutions that others miss.
Additional Insight: Portfolio careers often emerge from necessity, like navigating layoffs or industry shifts. This path builds remarkable resilience. Moreover, you can create portfolio experiences through side projects or cross-functional assignments.
Step 7: AI Fluency
I spent months building AI tools myself. Through this immersion, I understood true limits. Notably, AI fluency ranks as a top skill for 2026.
You can build this skill through daily practice. First, start by using agents for your tasks. Then, show your team how to use them. Indeed, fluency means discerning good AI from bad.
Additional Insight: Your depth of technical fluency depends on your role and interests. Start with user-level fluency and deepen your skills based on your team’s needs.
Step 8: Lessons Learned
Your work history acts as training data. Specifically, I turned past cases into smart AI prompts. Additionally, I coded past failures into new safety measures.
Therefore, document your work to build better systems. Next, turn your personal success into shared tools. Consequently, this helps everyone grow faster.
Additional Insight: Your experiences contain valuable data for building better systems. Therefore, consider starting a simple lessons-learned log that your team can reference.
Step 9: Risk & Execution
Innovation must scale safely. Specifically, I use business models to ensure quality. Indeed, proper rules help teams innovate fearlessly.
For example, tools like risk assessors help humans make choices. Moreover, always prioritize people’s safety first. Consequently, this creates a lasting AI success culture.
Additional Insight: Risk frameworks should enable innovation, not hinder it. Therefore, start with lightweight governance and adjust based on your organization’s risk tolerance.
The GitHub Ecosystem: Tools for Your Team
To help my community, I built a five-repository ecosystem. Importantly, these are not just code files. Rather, they are templates for human-AI collaboration.
- The Cross-Industry PM Playbook
This is the foundation of the entire system. Notably, it contains 428 commits of hard-won wisdom. Consequently, it helps teams see their experience as an asset. Therefore, use this to translate past work into AI-ready logic.
- Innovation in Action
This repository holds executable AI workflows. Specifically, I used tools like Perplexity and Claude to build these. Currently, we focus on healthcare, aerospace, and education sectors. Consequently, they help your staff deliver quality work faster.
- Speaking & Resources
This repository holds my conference talks and industry insights. Moreover, you can use these resources to train stakeholders. Indeed, showing the work builds necessary trust.
- The Operational Toolkit
This toolkit contains team-ready checklists and canvases. Specifically, we designed these for collaborative human use. Additionally, these templates help you deploy AI while preserving culture.
- Forked Agents (The Multi-Agent Framework)
This is the most technical ecosystem component. Specifically, it is a forked system containing 91 specialized AI agents. Moreover, it shows how different AI skills work together. For leaders, it serves as a model for future scale.
